The aim of this page is to show the 1-75 line-up during the changeover from regular wheels to superfast.
The models in this section all date from 1969-71. This was the time when the regular wheel line-up was
being converted to superfast wheels to compete with Mattel's 'Hot Wheels' Range. Hot Wheels had been launched
in 1969 and had immediately started to eat into Lesney's market share.
Initially as some models were converted
to Superfast they retained their standard wheel colours before being given bright new paint jobs. These models
are quite rare and are highly prized by collectors. During this time of changeover the Matchbox range was sold
in what is known as 'F' type boxes. Most of these box types remained unaltered until 1970-71 although many
had revised pictures to include superfast wheels and 'Superfast' added to the box.
So far I have only been able to find Superfast examples for 5, 8, 12, 14, 15,
20, 25, 27, 29, 33, 35, 36, 41, 45, 46, 50, 53, 55, 56, 59, 62, 64, 66, 67, 69, 73 and 74. If anyone knows of other
'F' type Superfast examples I would love to hear about them.
